A fence lives outdoors with no roof over it, so material choice matters even more than it does for a deck. Here's what each common fencing material realistically delivers:

Why Posts Fail First
Nearly every leaning, wobbling wood fence has the same autopsy: the boards and rails are fine, but the posts rotted through at the ground line. That few inches where the post passes from air into soil stays alternately wet and oxygenated — the exact conditions rot fungi love. Below that zone the wood is too oxygen-starved to rot quickly; above it, the post dries out. Right at grade, posts get eaten in half.
Concrete collars can make this worse rather than better when they're done wrong. A collar finished flat or dished at the top funnels rainwater into the gap between concrete and wood and holds it there. The fix is pouring the collar to shed water — crowned above grade, sloped away from the post — and setting the post on gravel so water under the post can drain.
In cold climates, frost heave adds a second failure mode: collars poured too shallow get gripped by freezing soil and jacked upward a little each winter, tilting posts and cracking rails loose. Posts set below the local frost line (commonly 30–48 inches) stay put.
How to Extend a Fence's Life

- Keep soil and mulch off the boards: Grade, garden beds, and mulch that creep up against the bottom rail or board ends wick moisture continuously. Keep 2+ inches of clearance between wood and anything that holds water.
- Fix leaners fast: A leaning post loads its neighbors, works fasteners loose along the whole run, and opens joints that let water in. Re-plumbing or sistering one post the season it starts to lean is cheap; waiting turns one bad post into a bad section.
- Watch the sprinklers: An irrigation head that soaks the same fence section every morning will rot that section years ahead of the rest.
Replace Posts or the Whole Fence?
Because posts fail first, a wood fence often reaches a mid-life fork: rotted posts holding up perfectly sound boards. Post-only replacement works when the pickets and rails pass a simple check — no widespread soft spots, boards still hold fasteners, and the fence looks straight once the bad posts are propped plumb. Swapping a post means detaching the rails, pulling or breaking out the old footing, setting a new post in fresh concrete, and re-hanging — a manageable DIY job per post.
