For storage tank water heaters, household size is the primary sizing factor. The tank needs to hold enough hot water for your busiest hour — usually the morning shower rush — plus recover fast enough for the next round. These are the standard recommendations:

Tank capacity alone doesn't tell the whole story. Two 50-gallon heaters can deliver very different amounts of hot water in a busy hour, because delivery depends on both the stored volume and how fast the heater reheats incoming cold water. That combined figure is the First-Hour Rating (FHR) — the gallons of hot water the unit can supply in one hour starting from a full tank.

To use it, estimate your busiest hour: a shower uses roughly 10-15 gallons of hot water, a shave or face-washing 2-3 gallons, and a dishwasher 6 gallons. A family of four running three morning showers plus a sink needs an FHR of about 45-50 gallons. Match or beat that number and you won't run cold, even if the raw tank size seems modest.

Tank vs Tankless: Two Different Sizing Questions

Tank heaters are sized by volume — how much hot water you use in your busiest hour. Tankless heaters store nothing, so they are sized by flow rate — how much hot water you need at any single moment, measured in gallons per minute (GPM).

Add up the fixtures that realistically run at the same time: a shower is about 2.0 GPM, a bathroom faucet 1.0-1.5 GPM, a kitchen faucet 1.5-2.0 GPM, and a washing machine 2.0 GPM. A shower plus a running faucet needs roughly 4-5 GPM; two simultaneous showers plus a kitchen sink pushes 6-7 GPM. Climate matters too: a tankless unit's rated GPM assumes a moderate temperature rise, and cold northern groundwater (as low as 40°F) can cut real-world output significantly. Gas vs Electric Recovery

Gas tank heaters recover much faster than electric — a typical 40,000 BTU gas burner reheats a 50-gallon tank in about an hour, while a standard 4,500-watt electric element takes closer to two.
