- Clear snow loads from flat and low-slope roofs — Porch roofs, carports, and sheds with shallow pitches can't shed snow the way a steep roof does. Wet snow weighs 12–20 lbs per cubic foot, so a two-foot accumulation puts serious stress on light framing. Use a roof rake from the ground after major storms — never climb onto a snow-covered roof.
- Check the garage door seal — Inspect the rubber bottom seal and side weatherstripping for cracks and gaps. A failed seal lets in freezing air, snowmelt, and rodents, and if the garage shares a wall with living space it drags down the whole house's efficiency. - Prevent frozen pipes — On nights below about 20°F, open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so warm air reaches the plumbing, and let vulnerable faucets drip — moving water resists freezing. - Check the furnace filter monthly — Winter is peak runtime, and a clogged filter makes the furnace work harder, overheat, and short-cycle — the leading preventable cause of mid-winter failures. - Test the sump pump — Mid-winter thaws and early spring melt arrive fast. Pour a bucket of water into the pit and confirm the pump kicks on, evacuates the water, and shuts off. - Inspect the attic for leaks and condensation — Once or twice a winter, look for wet or compressed insulation, frost on the underside of the roof deck, and water stains around vents and chimneys. Frost buildup means warm moist air is leaking up from the house — an air-sealing problem that quietly rots roof sheathing.

Below 30%, you get cracked wood trim, static shocks, and dry sinuses; above 50%, warm indoor air condenses on cold windows and inside wall cavities, feeding mold and rot.
